SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.00 g, 1 h), circa 430-420. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding reins in both hands; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣΥΡΑ[ΚΟΣΙ]ΟΝ Head of Arethousa to right, her hair tied with a ribbon, wearing pendant earring and simple necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right and left. Boehringer 676 (V338/R463). SNG ANS 224 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with a fine style head of Arethousa. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with minor pitting and light scratches, otherwise, very fine.
